Your objective is to explore these strange new worlds, and to find all 24 items known as effects to beat the game.
Yume Nikki is an exploration horror title set in the dreamscape of the main character. When you fall asleep, the main character can go into an area known as the Nexus, which serves as the central hub. In this area, 13 doors lead to different unnamed worlds with your aim being to find items known as effects.
These effects are a variety of different things, like a flute or a frog, arguably the most useful thing is the bike which doubles movement speed. Effects are also useful for exploring the games hidden areas. There are a variety of special events, and easter eggs that can only be found by using certain effects in tandem with each other. This helps adding extra layers of gameplay. Another cool feature of the game is that some of the initial 13 worlds are interconnected. The way they’re connected requires you to go through multiple levels, which is an interesting mechanic. There are some in-game enemies, but you don’t die. You are transported to an inescapable room.
The only way to exit is through waking up, which is done by pressing the nine key. This wakes up your character, and you go back to sleep again, go to the Nexus and try to avoid that enemy next time around. Once everything is collected, players get to see the twist ending.

This title has a lot of different layers to it, which makes playing it in interesting. Chaining effects is fun, and the only negative is the ending.

Yes. It’s a great title that does an excellent job with balancing easter eggs, symbolism, and item effects all in an open world environment.

Horror + Undertale
The game seems to take inspiration from the art style and feel to the gameplay of Undertale. There is a focus on horror through and through, developed by Kikiyama and made using the RPG maker engine. It’s a very dark game and isn’t for the faint of heart but still very enjoyable. It adds a lot to the game without the dark tone it wouldn’t be as enjoyable as it is.

Even though the plot isn’t given to you on a plate it is there but it’s behind closed doors. Meaning that you will have to work out the story of this game when playing through. So, maybe it’s more like a mix of Horror, Undertale and Dark Souls with you having to work out the story for yourself. Weird and wonderful.
The graphics are a simple Pixel art style, and this is where it looks like it took the inspiration from Undertale. The simple art style doesn’t take anything away from the game though. As it never did for Undertale which is why it also works for Yume Nikki. If anything, it adds a lot more to the atmosphere. It makes it feel nervous as you don’t know what is going on due to subtle detail in the pixel art. The Pixel art adds a lot to the game, making you feel very uneasy throughout your experience adding more to the horror element.

The gameplay for Yume Nikki is very simple as you explore through the world, you must find these 24 objectives. It’s a very simple way to play through the game but the horror elements to it make you feel scared through the game. So, the true task through the game is getting through without being too scared. As you go through the game, the 12 worlds, you expand into a large world which is a big surprise. As you go in thinking it’s going to be a short game but turns into a large open game with a lot of exploring to do. It is a horror game, so it’s best for fans of the horror genre to play but I do think if you enjoyed games like Undertale you would enjoy the expansive world of Yume Nikki throws you into, just make sure you bring you blanket!

The game has a very simple art style but somehow managed to give the uneasy feel throughout the game adds a lot to the horror element of the game. The simple gameplay kind of adds a walking sim element to it but the horror and explore through the worlds to find objects making it a very enjoyable and fearsome game.
